Women Do News

Jareen Imam is one of the founding members of the non-profit organization Women Do News, a group whose goal is to increase the biographies of notable female journalists on Wikipedia in order to bridge the gender gap and reduce biases in the media industry. She is the head of the organization’s live events programming and sits on the leadership team where she contributes to the organization’s strategy, growth, communications, and marketing.

Jareen has spoken at conferences hosted by groups such as the Asian American Journalism Association (AAJA), Take the Lead, Journalism and Women Symposium (JAWS), and more about the mission-driven work being done by Women Do News.

Leading edit-a-thons

Jareen is a part of the leadership team that creates custom training and hosts edit-a-thons to teach people who to created and add articles into Wikipedia for notable women and nonbinary journalists who have been underrepresented or not represented for their work and contributions in the journalism industry. Her team has taught a variety of people from college students to professional journalists.

Jareen has been interviewed by various publications about Women Do News on how the work of adding more biographies of notable female journalists online will not only help promote more equality and inclusion for various groups like women, nonbinary individuals, and minority journalists, but it could also help increase safety and security for journalists as well.
