Jareen has more than seven years of board experience. She has experience starting nonprofits, serving as an active board member, chairing committees, and creating governance structures for nonprofits and other organizations. She is currently open to new board opportunities with organizations focused on news, media, digital media, and marketing.
Jareen Imam was one of the founding members of Women Do News, a nonprofit organization whose goal is to increase the number of biographies of notable female journalists on Wikipedia, helping bridge the gender gap and reduce bias in the media industry. She leads the organization’s live events programming and sits on its leadership team, where she contributes to strategy, growth, communications, and marketing.
Jareen has spoken at conferences hosted by groups such as the Asian American Journalists Association (AAJA), Take the Lead, Journalism and Women Symposium (JAWS), and more about the mission-driven work being done by Women Do News.
Jareen is part of the leadership team that creates custom training and hosts edit-a-thons to teach people how to create and add Wikipedia articles for notable women and nonbinary journalists whose work and contributions have been underrepresented or omitted. Her team has taught everyone from college students to professional journalists.
Since 2021, Jareen has been an active board member of the Bay City News Foundation, providing expertise in marketing, content development, and social media strategy to help guide the local news organization as it unifies its branding, expands its audience, reaches new members, and generates donations. She currently serves as the board’s marketing chair.
Jareen has been interviewed by various publications about Women Do News and how adding more biographies of notable female journalists online can promote equity and inclusion for women, nonbinary people, and journalists from underrepresented groups while also helping improve journalists’ safety and security.
